Own brief

I am going to make a 2d platform game that has some sort of maze inside of It. The genre am going to be using is sci fi with aspects of puzzle and maths to it I want my game to be mentally challenging and to push the minds of the users that play it. The artistic style I am going to be using is abstract as I am making the characters and I don’t want them to look like anything from real life.

Some of the other artistic styles aren’t compatible with 2d games for example cell shading which is used to make 3d characters look more cartoony which can be used on a 2d character but won’t look good at all. My target age range is people from the ages of 12 until 25 as these people can play video games and mostly have the mind capacity to navigate through puzzles, mazes and maths questions. Also this age range tend to enjoy sci fi related games more they also enjoy video games more and are most likely to play games on a daily basis for at least an hour. I want the puzzle part of the game to be something the player has to put together to solve a mystery i also want equations to be imputed into the game at some stage to continue. I want the game to have a reward system for example if you solve a maths problem you get a trophy or even if you pass a particularly hard level for the player to get a trophy or experience points. I also need to look into the text there is going to be in the game like the title or where it says what level you're on to be linked with the game or have some sort of sci fi aspect to it.
I Also have to look for inappropriate content as i want the pegi rating to be as low as possible to appeal to a wider variety of people so we can generate as much sales as possible if the age rating is 16 any one from the ages of 0 to 16 will not be able to play and that could be millions of possible sales.

client brief

I have to make a 2d platform game that's maze for my client. The genre for the game is sci fi with puzzle and maths parts of the game. I have to pick the artistic style and in my opinion the best artistic style for this type of game is cell shading as you can use some thing like photo realism on a 2d game. I wont be using more than 5 Mb to make the game as it doesn't require too much space as 3d games are normally larger I also have to create a 3 part story for the game.I also have to consider where i place objects or characters on the screen I want to use the rule of thirds which will make the game more aesthetically pleasing. There will not be any ethical issues with my game as all the characters are abstract which means they do not represent any thing from real life and i also cant be liable as my characters are abstract so i cant be showing anyone in a bad image.

I have to make sure my game is not too similar too any other games as there are copyright laws which means the exclusive and assignable legal right given to the originator for a fixed number of years to print, publish, perform, film or record literary, artistic, or musical material.

My target audience is teenagers especially students as they are most likely to play video games which makes them more likely to come across my game so I have to make sure they would be satisfied with the game.

1 Copyright law

copy right is when the law of a country gives the creator of an original piece of work whether it’s a game or song exclusive rights for its use and distribution this is usually for a set period of time and even while under copyright laws there is fair use. Fair use is when copyrighted material can be used with very strict limits copy right is not absolute but no one can take your work and pass it of as their own. Copy right was created on January 1st 1978. Copyright usually lasts from when the moment the piece of work is created until 70 years after the author’s death. If someone was to create a game this would protect their design for characters and levels and the main plot for the game.

2 Pegi
Pegi is a company that puts age restrictions on games based on their content before a game is released it goes through them and they view the content to search for content inappropriate for younger people. If a game has no adult content they will give it a lower age rating as it is safe for younger users to play but if it has adult content they will give it a higher age rating as to prevent children from viewing content that they shouldn’t. It is a European company and only puts age restrictions on European games.

client needs are meeting what the costumer wants in a product the client needs to get their value for money they need to feel like there money has been well spent. For example if a game says sci fi and has no science fiction it is not meeting the client needs.
audience
each game has a target audience a group of people it is aimed at if a game is aimed at young kids it cant have inappropriate or really graphic content. it can be aimed at adults and then the game can have inappropriate content but it must be labelled over 18.

all the things you need to create you're game the characters the background weapons. it is also the size of the game you also have to think about where youre going to put everything in the game.
typography
the way the text appears for example when the game is loading or you're on the menu bar or even the title of the game.
technical considerations
when creating a game there are a lot of technical aspects you need to consider like the size of the file and will it go well with the console or pc it is intended for.

exercise 4

understanding different types of digital graphics

file extension

file extensions are the end of the file that helps identify the type of files in operating systems such as Microsoft windows in Microsoft windows the file name extension is a period that is often followed by three characters. But may also be 1,2 or 4 characters long.

image compression

Image compression is when you save an image but use less space than it normally takes. It takes less space without compromising the quality of the image. It comes as the original then it is compressed and then restored so it doesn't loose any integrity and is smaller than the original.

Image capture

This is the act of taking a picture when you take a picture you are capturing an image it is the process of obtaining a digital image from a vision sensor it usually involves a hardware interface known as a frame grabber which captures single frames of video an example of this is to the right . also taking a screen shot is a type of image capture as you are capturing an image and adding it to a memory bank.

optimising

Optimising your images for the web allows you to have 2000 * 2000 pixels and 600 KB in order to ensure page speeds are consistently good across all devices it utilises responsive images which means only the size of the image required to load. The image to the right is

gaming platforms

arcade
arcade games are coin based unless they've been modified which means you have to pay to play they mostly have old games like tetras or pac man  the machines are also old and can be expensive.l
console
consoles are fun and i particularly enjoy them as you can play with youre friends if you have multiplke controlers
Pac man new story line

beginning
one of the ghosts kicks off with PAC man because he walked through it and ever since that day they've been opposites at war whenever the ghosts see pac man they gang up on him and try to eat him while hes just going about his business trying to eat food they want to stop him from eating so he doesn't get bigger than them so they do everything in there power to stop him.

middle
pac man is given the opportunity to fight back when he is given special chips that if he eats the ghosts become his prey. there is a limited amount and they are scattered all over the map he has to use them strategically and only use them when he is in serous danger. He is also given a teleportation portal which he can use to escape but the ghosts can also use them pac man eats all the food and consistently beets the ghosts.

end
pac man continues to beat the ghosts but they have nibbled him a few times one more time and he is dead they keep trying to corner him and he has to do everything in his power to avoid around there tricks. he has used up all off his special chips and is restricted to using the teleportation machine and common sense to dodge them he eats the final chip and defeats them.
pixel

A pixel is a small part of a picture when added with other parts it creates an image the more pixels there are the clearer and sharper the image the less pixels the picture looks more fake.A pixel is represented by a small square or dot on a computer or monitor display they are the building blocks of digital images.

raster
raster graphics make up most of what you see on your computer all they are made up of grid pixels commonly referred to as bitmap raster images and vector images are both made up of pixels but if you zoom into a raster image you can see the pixels if you zoom into a vector image it will look the same. Raster images has a specific amount of pixels so when you zoom in without changing the amount of pixels it will look blurry.

vector
vector images are still pixel based but rather than having a fixed amount of pixels there can be more or less so when you zoom in it still looks the same and is still clear. vector images can be scaled and printed at any size without loosing any quality a great example of the difference
between vector and raster images is the picture to the right.

BMP
The bmp file format is also known as bitmap is a raster graphics image file format used to store bitmap digital images. The BMP format is mostly used for raster graphic format dor saving image files.
GIF
A lossless format for image files that supports animated and graphic images. GMP is mostly used for images on the web and for sprites in software programs.
TIFF
Is a format for digital files also tiff files can be saved in a variety of colour formats and in various forms of compression. TIFF can be used for lossless compression so it wont take a lot off space and wont lose any integrity.
JPG
A format for compressing image files and is the most common for storing and transmitting photographic images on the internet.
PSD
Is the digital format that Photoshop uses for saving data it also allows the user to work with images even after the file has been saved.
WMF
Is a file extension for a graphics file used with Microsoft windows wmf files can contain both vector and bitmap image formation. Essentially a WMF file stores a list of functional calls that have to be issued to the windows.
FLA
The fla file format is the master document format for flash products. The information in the file consists of vector image data for use in animations and timeless used to control animation playback and audio.
AL
AL stands for abode illustrator represents single page vector drawings.

Computer game graphics

1 pixel art

Pixel art is a form of digital art where images are made and edited at pixel level using a graphics editing software it can make the image look dotted. What defines pixel art is its unique visual style where individual pixels serve as building block its like making a picture out of Lego. A pixel is a small part of a picture added up with other parts to form an image the more pixels the clearer and sharper the image the less pixels the worse the image.

2 concept

art concept art is a form of illustration used to convey an idea for use in films, video games, animation, comic books, or other media before it is put into the final product. Concept art is developed in many stages where they further develop the image. The main goal of concept art is to convey a visual representation of a design, idea, and/or mood for use in films.

3 texture art
Texture art is when you use colours and other types or art like photo realism to for example make a wall look like its made out of bricks or colour something a greyish silver to make it look like a metal it can imply the feel of something in real life.

4 background graphics
Background graphics is the part of the scene or picture that is the most far away from the viewer like a wall in the background or the sky line even a surface or a colour that is behind something.

Artistic styles

1 Cell shading

Cell shading is non realistic and is designed to make 3d graphics appear more flat it is the opposite of photo realism and makes the character come to life.
2 Photo realism

photo realism is to make the character or scene look as real as possible and when done properly can be mistaken for a real life picture and example of this is fifa as it is made to look like a real football match
3 exageration

exaggeration is used in cartoons and games especially anime as everything appears perfect the sunshine the size of the characters eyes and the way they move.
4 abstraction
Abstraction is when the objects in the game, cartoon has objects that do not resemble anything in real life it is completely made up by the artist and can be clever as it could make sense when you play the game or watch the sh
ow.
